NDIS FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY

The purpose of a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia is to determine an individual’s functional capacity and how their disability or condition impacts upon their daily life and ability to participate in activities.

This assessment can assist with:

  1. Resource Allocation: Once the NDIS has accepted your application, the assessment can assist with making recommendations of the level of support and funding an individual may require. This assists with individuals receiving the appropriate level of funding and support tailored to their specific needs and aligning with NDIS goals.

  2. Service Coordination: The assessment helps identify the types of supports and services that may be necessary to improve the individual’s well-being and participation in the community. This information is vital for coordinating the delivery of services from various providers.

  3. Monitoring Progress: The Functional Capacity Assessment establishes a baseline of the individual’s functional capacity. Over time, it can be used to track progress and assess whether the services and supports in the NDIS Plan are effectively helping the person achieve their goals and improve their quality of life.

  4. Advocacy and Decision-Making: The assessment provides evidence-based information that can be used in advocacy efforts and in making informed decisions about the type and level of support an individual requires.

  5. Equity and Fairness: The assessment process is designed to be fair and equitable, ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive the support they need regardless of their condition or disability type.

The process for this assessment includes:

  • Client/caregiver interview: to discuss concerns, developmental, medical, social and other relevant history.

  • A series of questionnaires to be completed which may include the school or others (depending on age of person being assessed)

  • Comprehensive report with recommendations.

Note: There is usually a minimum three week turnaround on reports, once all information has been received.
